A supplementary credit card is an additional card linked to a primary credit-card account. Another person can use it to spend from the same credit facility. It gives them a card in their own name; it does not create a second independent credit limit.
The primary cardholder remains responsible for repayment. Before requesting one, agree on a spending budget and check which benefits, fees and controls apply to the extra card.
How does a supplementary credit card work?
The bank issues the additional card under the existing account. Purchases made with either card use the shared available credit. A spending limit set on the supplementary card controls its use; it does not add credit to the account.
HSBC UAE, for example, lets primary cardholders view supplementary transactions on their monthly statement and set monthly spending limits in the app. Its terms make the primary cardholder responsible for amounts payable on the supplementary card.
That responsibility matters if the other person agrees to reimburse you. A private arrangement between family members does not replace the primary cardholder's repayment obligation to the bank.
Two cards, one limit: a worked example
Imagine an account with an AED 10,000 credit limit. The primary cardholder has spent AED 3,000 and the supplementary cardholder has spent AED 2,000. With no other transactions, fees or pending holds, AED 5,000 remains available across the account.
| Part of the shared limit | Amount |
|---|---|
Primary-card spending | AED 3,000 |
Supplementary-card spending | AED 2,000 |
Remaining available credit | AED 5,000 |
Total credit limit | AED 10,000 |
| Part of the shared limit | Amount |
|---|---|
Primary-card spending | AED 3,000 |
Supplementary-card spending | AED 2,000 |
Remaining available credit | AED 5,000 |
Total credit limit | AED 10,000 |
This is the illustrative example shown in the chart. The extra card shares the remaining AED 5,000; it does not have another AED 10,000 to spend. Pending authorisations, fees and other account entries also affect the available credit displayed by your bank.
Supplementary card or a separate credit card?
| Question | Supplementary card | Separate primary credit card |
|---|---|---|
Where does the spending go? | The existing primary account | A separate credit-card account |
Is the credit limit independent? | No; it shares the primary facility | Yes; the bank approves a separate facility |
Who repays the bank? | The primary cardholder under the account terms | The holder of the separate account |
How do you apply? | The existing primary cardholder requests an additional card | The applicant applies for their own credit facility |
What should you compare? | Extra-card fees, controls and eligible benefits | Eligibility, fees, borrowing cost and benefits |

Choose a supplementary card when shared household spending and central oversight suit you. Someone who wants an independent account needs to consider a separate application and its eligibility requirements.
Eligibility and documents in the UAE
The bank's rules decide who can receive an additional card, including the permitted relationship, age and residency requirements. Do not assume another issuer uses the same rules.
For an HSBC UAE supplementary-card application, the primary cardholder needs an active HSBC credit card. The bank asks for a passport and Emirates ID for a UAE-resident applicant, a passport for a non-resident, and proof of address when the applicant does not live with the primary cardholder. The application also includes consent to the use of the applicant's personal information.
Use your issuer's supplementary-card application instructions to prepare the documents. A supplementary request is different from applying for a new independent credit facility.
Fees, rewards and lounge access
Check the schedule of charges for the additional card's issuance, annual and replacement fees. A primary card's fee waiver does not by itself answer whether its supplementary cards carry a charge.
Check benefit rules separately. Supplementary spending can contribute to rewards on the primary account, but lounge visits, travel insurance, welcome offers and spending thresholds have their own eligibility conditions. Confirm whether the extra cardholder must register separately and whether a benefit allowance is shared across the account.
Set controls before handing over the card
Agree on which purchases the card will cover and how you will review them. Set the available spending controls, enable transaction notifications and review the statement together. A supplementary-card spending cap and the account's available credit are different limits: a transaction still needs enough available credit on the shared account.
If the card goes missing, block it promptly through the issuer. HSBC allows a supplementary card to be blocked without blocking the primary card. Follow the bank's cancellation process when the extra card is no longer needed, and review recurring payments attached to it.
