Why the MCC decides your reward at Boots

The reward a card pays at Boots depends on the merchant category code, not on what the shop sells. The code is a four-digit number the outlet's payment provider assigns, and your bank reads it to decide whether a payment counts as pharmacy spending or as general spend.

Boots outlets post under MCC 5912, Drug Stores and Pharmacies. A card with a higher rate on pharmacy spending earns it there. A card whose bonus category is something else pays its base rate on the same purchase.

The code appears on your statement only after the payment posts, when the card is already chosen. Checking the outlet first moves that decision to before you pay.
