Why the MCC decides your reward at IKEA

The reward a card pays at IKEA depends on the merchant category code, not on what the shop sells. The code is a four-digit number the outlet's payment provider assigns, and your bank reads it to decide whether a payment counts as retail spending or as general spend.

IKEA outlets mostly post under MCC 5712, Furniture, Home Furnishings, and Equipment Stores, ExceptAppliances. A card with a higher rate on retail spending earns it there. A card whose bonus category is something else pays its base rate on the same purchase.

The code appears on your statement only after the payment posts, when the card is already chosen. Checking the outlet first moves that decision to before you pay.
