What actually gets in the way on arrival is a thin file: the Al Etihad Credit Bureau has no history for you yet, and your salary may not be landing in a UAE account. The cards below start from an AED 5,000 monthly salary, most carry no annual fee, and several can be applied for without moving your salary to the issuing bank.

Why choose Credit Cards for Expats in the UAE

1.

There is no separate expat credit card

UAE banks do not run a distinct expat product line — residents on an employment visa apply for the same cards as everyone else. What differs is your evidence: a new arrival has no credit-bureau history and often no salary transfer yet, so the practical shortlist is the cards with the lowest salary floors and the fewest conditions attached.

2.

An empty AECB file is normal, not a rejection

The Al Etihad Credit Bureau records UAE credit history only. Arriving with no file is expected and banks assess new residents on salary, employer and affordability instead. Your first card is what starts the record; paying it in full each month is the fastest route to a score that unlocks better cards later.

3.

Salary transfer changes the terms, not your eligibility

A salary credited to the issuing bank is the strongest income signal there is, so transferring usually means a higher limit and fewer questions. Several cards here can still be applied for without it, evidenced by statements or a salary letter — expect a lower initial limit and additional checks.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Best Credit Cards for Expats in the UAE

Yes. Expat residents on a valid employment visa can apply for essentially any UAE credit card, and there is no separate expat product line. Approval depends on salary, employer and the bank's affordability assessment rather than on nationality.

AED 5,000 a month is the lowest common floor and covers the entry cards on this page, including Liv Cashback, Wio, CBD One, Mashreq Cashback and ADCB Essential Cashback. Emirates Islamic Switch Cashback starts at AED 10,000.

Yes. Every new resident starts with an empty Al Etihad Credit Bureau file and banks expect that. They look at your salary landing in a UAE account and at your employer instead. Entry-level cards with an AED 5,000 listed minimum are designed for first-time applicants, though approval remains the bank's decision. Our guide to how the UAE credit score works explains what the bureau starts recording once your first card is live.

Not always. Several UAE banks accept applications without a salary-transfer arrangement, verifying income through bank statements or a salary letter — see credit cards without salary transfer for the full list. Without a transfer the bank has less visibility into your income, so expect a lower initial credit limit or extra documentation, and cards that do not need a bank statement are a narrower set again.

Typically two to three months: a few weeks for the visa and Emirates ID, days for the bank account, then one or two payroll cycles so a salary credit is visible. The card decision itself usually takes days once you apply. New to the UAE walks the whole sequence in order, and choosing your first card in your first year in Dubai covers what to weigh once you are eligible.
